On February 16th 2006 in Brussels, Belgium was announced the participation of Greece in the International Intergovernmental initiative GEO (Group on Earth Observation) after the decision of the Ministry of development and more specifically the General Secretariat of Research and Technology. The General Secretariat of Research and Technology and the National Observatory of Athens as the main representatives of Greece in GEO decided the creation of the Greek GEO Office, which is going to regulate and carry out all the activities of GEO in a national level. The Greek GEO Office functions since the beginning of the 2007 and has as a target the effective participation of the country to the global activities under the framework of GEO and GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems).
